THE PREVALENCE OF STRABISMUS AND ASSOCIATED REFRACTIVE ERRORS IN SCHOOL CHILDREN IN AKURE SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT ONDO STATE

Associations between strabismus and refractive errors have been reported inprevious studies. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence andassociation with in school aged children between10?16 years. A total sample size of2600 subjects employed for study.Routine eye examinations were carried out on subjects. Unilateral cover test wasused detect presence while alternate used formeasurement deviation, thereafter objective subjective refraction wasconducted strabismic Spearman coefficient correlation check relationship errors. Theprevalence 1.92%.The esotropia andexotropia 1.15% 0.65% respectively, followed by hypertropia aprevalence 0.08% hypotropia a 0.04%. All strabismicchildren (n=50) had astigmatism, hyperopia andmyopia 1.27%, 0.35% 0.31% respectively. There positive correlationbetween errors, (P < 0.05 ?s 0.63).Theprevalence low study. As dioptric prism power ofstrabismus increased, lens error also increased.Proper detection care practitioners is key themanagement as high uncorrected could lead todevelopment strabismus.
